Abstract:

Akiyo Nomura (Staff Research Scientist, Technology Enablement and Design Group, Semiconductors, IBM Research – Tokyo)
Cutting-Edge Research and Development in Semiconductors and My Career Journey at IBM

Abstract:
Semiconductors are used in a wide range of applications, from everyday household appliances to social infrastructure, making them essential to our lives. In recent years, interest in semiconductors has been growing in Japan, with the Japanese government making substantial investments in this field. This presentation introduces cutting-edge logic devices and low-power AI hardware as part of semiconductor research, highlighting the fascinating aspects of the semiconductor field. This presentation also covers the process of choosing this field of specialization and the journey from entering university to obtaining a Ph.D.

Bio:
Dr. Akiyo Nomura is a Staff Research Scientist in the Technology Enablement and Design group, Semiconductors at IBM Research – Tokyo. She joined IBM in 2017 after receiving her MS from Keio University. Her major in university was solid-state physics with a focus on spintronics. Since she joined IBM, she has been working on a next-generation analog AI hardware accelerator for deep neural networks and spiking neural networks. In 2023, she got her Ph.D. from Keio University while working at IBM.
