その第33回として、NTT コミュニケーション科学基礎研究所との共催により、Database Laboratory, EPFL, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at LausanneのProfessor Stefano Spaccapietraをお招きし、 以下の要領で講演会を開催致します。会員以外の参加も可能ですので、お近くの方々にご周知頂ければ幸いです。

講演内容（Abstract)
Location-based services have emerged as one of the major trends in ubiquitous information delivery to mobile users.
This talk will discuss some characteristics of these services, focusing in particular on how they can manage to bridge the semantic gap between the user request and the available data. The main goal is to be able to provide information that is as relevant as possible for the specific user who is querying the service. This means that user profiles play an essential role, as well as an accurate description of which data is available and corresponds to the current location of the mobile user. However, specific knowledge about local context and generic knowledge about common understanding of things also are essential components needed to realize intelligent query answering under spatio-temporal constraints, which is what one would expect from location-based services.
講演者略歴(Biography)
Since 1988 he is a full professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, where he is heading the database laboratory. He has been in an academic position all along his career.
First at the University of Paris VI, where he got his PhD in 1978, then as a professor at the University of Burgundy, Dijon, 1983-88. His main research interests are in data semantics, conceptual modeling, spatio-temporal databases, data integration, and ontologies.
He is an IEEE Fellow, and recipient of the IFIP Silver Core Award (1998).
He is editor-in-chief of the Springer LNCS Journal on Data Semantics.
